FAQs
What does “certified organic” mean?
To be “certified organic,” the fruit must be grown, harvested, stored and shipped without the use of synthetic chemical inputs (fertilizer, pesticides, antibiotics, food additives), genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or irradiation for at least three years prior to certification. Strict physical separation of organic products from non-certified products must be maintained and regular on-site inspections are required.
What is the difference between green kiwifruit and gold kiwifruit?
Green kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) has vibrant green flesh, fuzzy skin, and a bold sweet, tangy flavor. Gold kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) has a lighter yellow-colored flesh, smooth skin and a sweet, slightly tropical flavor.
How do you know if a kiwi is ripe? Can you quicken the ripening process?
Wild River™ kiwis are ready to eat when they are soft to the touch. To ripen, place the kiwi in a ripening bowl or a brown paper bag with 2 to 3 apples or bananas. Why apples and bananas? The additional fruit creates natural ethylene gas which hastens the ripening process.
Are pluots genetically modified (GMO)?
No. The pluot (plum-apricot hybrid) was developed by cross-breeding plums and apricots by hand pollination – NOT genetic modification. More than 20 varieties exist, each with a unique color, shape and flavor.
