Origination

The plum is a drupe fruit of the genus Prunus and has been traced to origins in Asia and Eastern Europe.  Plums may have been one of the first fruits ever cultivated by humans as plum remains have been found in Neolithic age archaeological sites along with olives, grapes and figs.  Mature plum fruit may have a dusty-white coating that gives them a glaucous appearance.  This is an epicuticular wax coating, known as “wax bloom.”

Ripening & Storage

Wild River™ Organic Plums are left to ripen on the tree and picked shortly before they are ready to eat.  If firm, plums typically ripen after a few days to a week when stored at room temperature.  They should not be kept in direct sunlight.  Plums keep best if refrigerated after ripening and will typically store there for 1-2 weeks.

Nutritional Information & Health Benefits

Plums are often used to help regulate the functioning of the digestive system.  This is attributed to compounds present in the fruit, such as dietary fiber, sorbitol and isatin.  Fresh plums are a moderate source of vitamin A, vitamin C and beta carotene, and are plentiful in minerals like potassium, fluoride and iron.  These vitamins and minerals help control high blood pressure and aid in metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
